The Toki (adze) is far more than a carving tool; it is a symbol of unwavering determination and mastery. Its blade demanded precision, strength, and respect; qualities that transformed it into a symbol of power and leadership often worn as a pendant by chiefs and elders. Today, it serves as a talisman, inspiring the wearer to face life's challenges with the same resilience and skill as the ancestors who wielded it.
The 3 lines represent the 3 Baskets of Knowledge.
Te Kete Tuauri carries ancestral knowledge and rituals. Te Kete Aronui brings knowledge of the natural world and the arts. Te Kete Tuatea holds knowledge of good and evil, teaching and learning.
The 3 lines can also represent Past, Present and Future, or Ancestors, the ones living now and the generations to come.
The sacred stone of Aotearoa. Pounamu of this beautiful land encompasses nephrite jade, serpentine, and tangiwai (bowenite). To the Māori of New Zealand, Pounamu (greenstone) is more than just a stone, it is a taonga (treasure) woven into the spiritual and cultural fabric of their ancestors. Revered as a gift from the gods, it carries the mana (prestige) of the land and the strength of the rivers.
When worn close to the skin it absorbs your wairua (spirit); over time its lustre deepens along with the bond between wearer and stone. Pounamu is a gift from the heart and as such should be worn of displayed with respect and pride.
Comes with an adjustable cord and Jute drawstring bag.
This will be the exact piece you will receive in the photos, there may be a slight degree of colour variation based on different computer or mobile phone screen resolutions that you are viewing from.
BEHIND TOKI
Traditionally, Toki was used by Māori to cut and work timber for meeting houses and carvings. Because of the determination, control and strength required to skilfully use the Toki, it became a symbol of ability, power and authority. Ceremonial Toki were traditionally worn by Māori elders and Chiefs to signify leadership qualities.
May the Toki bring the wearer strength, courage and inspiration on their journey in life.
